About Us...

         Bill and Linda Mitchell started Sky Island Orchids in 1983 when they moved to Oregon from Arizona.  Bill began growing orchids in the '50's and was a founding member of the Orchid Society of Arizona.  He holds a degree in Botany from Arizona State Univ.  Both Bill and Linda are accredited American Orchid Society judges in the Pacific Northwest Center and have actively participated in and served as officers in several of the orchid societies in Oregon as well as the early beginnings of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance.

    The nursery is located in the inland foothills of the Coast Range of mountains in western Oregon.  The picture is of the view from the property across Moore's Valley.  It's a quiet, peaceful retreat about an hour south and west of Portland, and an hour north and west of Salem, OR.  We get about 48" to 60" of rain per year and enjoy a very gentle climate.  The real challenge with all the rain is the amount of light we get! 

    Our breeding program has produced nearly 250 named hybrids with almost 40 American Orchid Society flower quality awards, including 3 Awards of Quality to Sky Island Crosses and several  Awards for culture.

   Our vision is to produce high quality, healthy Phalaenopsis plants at a reasonable price and to support our customers with information and encouragement.
